«Three Generations» SBR Mahjong Tournament 2026-05

«Three Generations» SBR Mahjong Tournament, i.e., a mahjong tournament with separate prizes for juniors (ages 7-16) and senior players (ages 55 and up), took place on May 30, 2026 in Moscow at the Meridian Cultural Center.

The tournament was attended by 20 players from Moscow and Ryazan.

SBR Mahjong Mini-Tournament «2026-04»

The SBR Mahjong Mini-Tournament «2026-04» was held on April 25, 2026, at the Meridian Cultural Center in Moscow.

The tournament was attended by 20 players from Moscow, representing two clubs: «Tile» and «Panda in the Chest».

The mini-tournament was held in a beginners' tournament format, meaning all prizes were awarded only to the beginners' group.

The 9th SBR Moscow Open

The 9th SBR Moscow Open took place on March 28, 2026 in Moscow at the Meridian Central Cultural Center.

The championship was attended by 36 players: 32 players from Moscow and the region, 3 players from Ryazan and 1 player from China. The championship set records for both the number of participants and the duration of the competition. After a tough and uncompromising battle, a new Moscow champion was determined: Natalia Chichigina, who won this title for the second time (the first time was in 2021).

Natalia Chichigina and Igor Shcheglov received prizes for their hand-based nominations. Denis Lugannikov and Margarita Makarycheva, who played their 10th SBR tournament, received a commemorative token.

A medal was also awarded to Denis Lugannikov, the 1st prize winner of the Annual Online MCR Marathon 2025-2026.

Intrigue

Even before the start of the championship, the organizer outlined two intrigues for the tournament: would any of the previous champions be able to repeat their success, and how would the battle for first place between representatives of the «old» and «new» schools of mahjong be resolved? The «old» school won, with the top two places narrowly separated by Natalia and Tatiana, players who had already competed in mahjong tournaments back in 2010.

Champion

The new SBR Moscow champion, Natalia Chichigina, is a representative of the «old school». She played her first MCR tournament in March 2010, and by October of that year, she had become the MCR Russian champion! Her first tournament abroad was World Mahjong Championship 2012 in Chongqing, China. She is a multiple winner and runner-up of MCR championships in Russia. Out of the nine SBR Moscow Open championships, Natalia has participated in seven, winning two. In the Chichigin family, mahjong is also played by Andrey (a member of the RMF board), son Vyacheslav, and daughter Tatyana, who played her first tournament.

Development of SBR Mahjong in Russia

The first SBR Mahjong games were played at the end of 2016. In general, several phases in the development of SBR Mahjong in Russia can be noted:

late 2016 – mid-2017 — SBR rules emerge after the SBR 1st World Grand Prix in China, first club games, preparation for tournaments
mid-2017 – mid-2022 — SBR championships and club tournaments
September 2022 — junior group joins the «Tile» tournament mahjong club at the Meridian Cultural Center, regular classes begin
from October 2022 — «Junior+» tournaments launch at the Meridian Cultural Center
from September 2023 — club games at the «Panda in the Chest» club
from September 2024 — «Three Generations» at the Meridian Central Chess Club
August 2025 — the first SBR championship outside Moscow, in Ryazan
from September 2025 — play under the new version of SBR Rules (based on «MIL-2025»)

Ryazan

Three players from Ryazan, the Ryzhanin-Shcheglov clan, participated in the Moscow championship. A total of five players from Ryazan have traveled to Moscow for tournaments. Ryazan itself has already hosted two tournaments, and a third will be held in April 2026. The total number of players in Ryazan has reached two dozen. The organizer of the championship presented the club at School No. 36 in Ryazan with a game set and books on mahjong.

The SBR Mahjong Mini-Tournament «2026-03» was held on March 21, 2026, at the Meridian Cultural Center in Moscow.

The tournament was attended by 24 players from Moscow, representing two clubs: «Tile» and «Panda in the Chest».

The mini-tournament was held in a beginners' tournament format, meaning all prizes were awarded only to the beginners' group.

SBR Mahjong Tournament for Beginners «Mahjong Festival 2026-01»

The SBR Mahjong Tournament for Beginners «Mahjong Festival 2026-01» was held on January 17, 2026 in Moscow at the Meridian Cultural Center.

The tournament was attended by 16 players from Moscow, representing two clubs: «Tile» and «Panda in the Chest».

What is a «Mahjong Festival»?

In order to hold a tournament specifically for beginners, it was decided to limit participation to experienced players and offer the opportunity to players with minimal or no experience (debutants). In the 2025-2026 and 2026-2027 seasons, four beginner tournaments were added to the calendar.
