SBR Mahjong Tournament for Beginners "Mahjong Festival 2024-11"

The SBR Mahjong Tournament for Beginners "Mahjong Festival 2024-11" was held November 23, 2024 in Moscow at the Meridian Cultural Center.

28 players from Moscow took part in the tournament. The vast majority of participants, 17 players, played their first tournament!

What is a "Mahjong Festival"?

The idea goes back to the very first event of this kind, held back in June 2022, when a tournament was held immediately after the master class! At the suggestion of the organizer, the master class visitors magically turned into players, for many of them it was an unforgettable experience. The event was called "Mahjong Festival" — a symbiosis of educational and competitive components.

In order to hold a tournament specifically for beginners, it was decided to limit participation to "experienced" players and provide an opportunity to play for players with minimal or no experience at all (the first tournament). The result exceeded the wildest expectations — 28 participants of the "mahjong festival" in November are a clear proof of this. It was decided to explore the possibility and add more dates to the calendar for holding such tournaments.

Winners and runners-up:

  • 1st place overall — Maxim Pevchev, 15 years old
  • 2nd place overall — Lidiya Istomina, 14 years old
  • 3rd place overall and 1st place among debutants — Olga Nabatova
  • 2nd place among debutants — Margarita Makarcheva
  • 3rd place among debutants — Irina Lesneva
  • best "clan" — the Pevchev family

Organizer

Vitaly Novikov held his 74th tournament in mahjong, including the 32nd SBR Mahjong Tournament.

The first SBR mahjong tournament in “Panda in the Chest” club

The FIRST SBR mahjong tournament of the family club “Panda in the Chest” was held on May 5, 2024 in Moscow in the creative workshops “Chest”. 16 players from Moscow took part in the tournament.

The tournament in the “Panda in the Chest” club continues the series of tournaments of the “Junior+” format (i.e. tournaments with the participation of juniors — children 8-15 years old), a trend that began back in October 2022 at the Meridian Culture Center. As a rule, parents also participate in such tournaments along with juniors, forming “clans”, that is players from the same family. However, in the club tournament “Panda in the Chest” a kind of record was set, the participation of clans of three people, and there were THREE such clans!

During the uncompromising struggle, the winners and prize-winners were determined:

  • 1st place in the overall standings – Nikolay Ermanson
  • 2nd place in the overall standings – Karina Abdullaeva
  • 3rd place in the overall standings and 1st place among juniors – Lidiya Istomina, 13 years old
  • 2nd place among juniors – Anastasia Pevcheva, 13 years old
  • 3rd place among juniors – German Ermanson, 9 years old

Alexander Istomin held his the FIRST mahjong tournament. The Russian Mahjong Federation expresses gratitude to the creative workshops "Chest" (director – Maria Istomina) for providing a new platform for holding SBR mahjong tournaments.

SBR Moscow Open 2023

SBR Moscow Open 2023 took place on May 20, 2023 in Moscow at the Meridian Cultural Center.

28 players from Moscow and the region took part in the championship. SBR Moscow Open was held for the 6th time, but for the first time it gathered such a large and diverse participation.

Five "segments" could be counted: players with international experience, regular tournament players, juniors (children 8-14 years old), parents of juniors, as well as "debutants" — players, participating in tournaments for the first time. For the first time in the history of tournaments, "anti-clan" seating scheme was used, in which players from the same family ("clan") did not play together at the same table.

In the course of an uncompromising struggle, a new champion of Moscow was determined — it was the debutant of the championship, Evgeniya Savelyeva. The trophies were awarded to the top three prize winners, as well as to the best junior player — the reigning champion of Moscow among juniors Alexander Tishchenko.

Winners and runners-up:

  • 1st place and champion title — Evgeniya Savelyeva
  • 2nd place — Andrey Klimov
  • 3rd place — Pavel Anokhin
  • 1st place among juniors — Alexander Tishchenko, 12 years old

"Junior+" SBR Mahjong Tournament 2022-12

"Junior+" SBR Mahjong Tournament 2022-12 took place on December 3, 2022 in Moscow at the Meridian Cultural Center. On the same day, after the lunch break, the first SBR pairs tournament took place.

This is already the second tournament of the "Junior+" format, i.e. tournament according to the full rules of Sichuan mahjong with the participation of juniors (children 8-14 years old).

The format of the tournament, in which adult players participate together with juniors (as a rule, these were the parents of juniors), has proven itself well. Subsequent tournaments in 2023, with the exception of the SBR Moscow Open 2023, are expected to be held in the same format.

The victory in the main tournament gained Makar Skripachov, 12 years old, the 2nd place was also taken by a junior,Dmitry Aksyonov, 10 years old, thus overtaking several adult participants with existing tournament experience.

Prize-winners of the individual tournament:

  • 1st place overall and 1st place among juniors — Makar Skripachov, 12 years old
  • 2nd place overall and 2nd place among juniors — Dmitry Aksyonov, 10 years old
  • 3rd place overall — Alexey Kozhevnikov
  • 3rd place among juniors — Edward Kubanov, 10 years old

After the lunch break, the first pairs tournament took place. In this type of competition, not four independent players play at each table, but a pair competes against another pair; a pair of players, as a rule, is either siblings, or parent + child, or spouses, etc.

6 pairs participated, the first place was shared by: Sofia + Pavel and Yulia + Vitaly.

SBR Moscow Open Junior 2022

The 1st SBR Moscow Open Junior took place on November 5, 2022 in Moscow at the Meridian Cultural Center.

12 young players from Moscow and Moscow region took part in the tournament. This tournament was the first in the history of Moscow Sichuan-style mahjong championship among juniors (children 8-14 years old).

But, as it turned out from the greetings sent by the Secretary General of Mahjong International League (MIL) Mr. Li Wenlong, this tournament was the first in the world in this format, i.e. with participation restriction for juniors only.

Champion

The first winner of SBR Moscow Open Junior and the first champion of Moscow among juniors is Alexander Tishchenko. This victory turned out to be the best gift for his 12th birthday the day after the championship!

Alexander got acquainted with mahjong six months ago, in May 2022. In June and August, he attended several classes of the Meridian Vacation summer program. Since September, Alexander has been enrolled in the "Tile" mahjong circle in Meridian Cultural Center. Here is how he describes what happened in an impromptu interview:
“I was very happy to participate in this tournament, and even more so to win. It was pleasant and unexpected. Thanks to the organizers of the tournament and the teacher."

Winners and runners-up

  • 1st place – Alexander Tishchenko (11 years old)
  • 2nd place – Igor Kozhevnikov (10 years old)
  • 3rd place – Stefania Istomina (9 years old)
  • best results in the semi-final sessions – Daria Gneusheva (10 years old), Lidia Istomina (12 years old), Alexander Tishchenko (11 years old)

Special thanks to the parents of the championship participants! Almost all parents acted as photo and video reporters, and those who know the rules became assistants to the chief referee.
